Bedwas RFC first team bought the curtain down on the clubs most successful season in recent memory putting in another ten try performance.
On a cool, overcast afternoon the home side came out determined to spoil the party by taking the lead with a converted try after four minutes play.
Bedwas hit back with a catch and drive try after eleven minutes, Mike Dacey steering the bus over the line. James Hallett missed the conversion.
Three minutes later a break down the middle by Jake Lee put the supporting Rhys Morgans in for a try improved upon by Hallett.
St Peters responded with a well worked converted try to put themselves two points ahead.
Both sides vied to add to the score, but nothing was added until just after the half hour mark as Dale Rogers and the forward pack drove through for a try converted by Hallett.
Bedwas extended their lead just before the half time break as Rhys Peters burst through the home defence to cross for a try converted by Hallett.
With three minutes of the second half elapsed Luke Crane raced through a gap in the home defence for try number five, Hallett missed the conversion.
Bedwas upped the ante and a Dale Rogers try after seven minutes converted by Hallett and a penalty try after thirteen minutes gave Bedwas a thirty-one-point advantage. St Peters’ scrum half being sinbinned for a ruck offence leading to the penalty try putting his side under more pressure.
St Peters discipline slipped away with their right winger being sin binned for a deliberate knock on and then a couple of bouts of fisticuffs followed with a St Peters replacement and Lewis Crane issued yellow cards for their parts in the handbag throwing contest.
Rhys Morgans ran through for Bedwas’ eighth try converted by Hallett to take the side beyond fifty points.
Replacement Jac Crompton added try number nine with ten minutes left on the clock, Hallett again converting.
St Peters were determined to finish on a high and managed a converted try, but Bedwas had the last say as Jac Crompton ran through for a try. Brynley Toms on his last Bedwas appearance before retirement stepped up and to the delight of the Bedwas players, coaches and supporters successfully kicked the conversion with the last kick of the game.
Bedwas collected the league winner’s trophy and celebrated on the pitch and back at the Bridgefield what a magnificent team effort has been this season. Huge credit must be given to the playing staff, coaches, and back-room staff for their efforts.
The Bedwas man of the match award was given to Brynley Toms in recognition of his contribution to the team in two spells stretching back to 2013 making 208 appearances and the successful conversion of the last try of the day.
