Bedwas celebrated their first home game since the end of January with an emphatic win over Abertillery BG RFC. Despite the Bedwas dominance credit must be given to the north Gwent side who never threw in the towel as they sought a four try bonus point.
Bedwas survived a tricky opening by not claiming the kick-off but were soon into their stride opening the scoring after four minutes as Mike Dacey was driven over from a catch and drive move. James Hallett added the extras.
Bedwas doubled their lead with a fine try the ball going across the field for Tristan Kugler to cross the whitewash, James Hallett again converting.
It was not a long wait the next try as Aaron Billingham sprinted through to cross in the right-hand corner, Hallett’s conversion attempt hit an upright and bounced away from the target.
It was all Bedwas at this stage as Rhys Morgans burst through the defence for the bonus point winning try with only fifteen minutes elapsed. Hallett successfully converted.
Dale Rogers shrugged off would be tacklers to cross for try number five with twenty minutes elapsed, Hallett again converted. Two minutes later Leo Geraci added try number six again converted by Hallett. Unfortunately, Geraci injured himself crossing the whitewash and took no further part in the game. Hamish Anderson came on as his replacement.
It was Anderson who added try number seven as he broke through down the left, Hallett again adding the extras.
Abertillery then enjoyed a purple patch as they scored two tries in three minutes by fly half Aneurin Williams and outside centre Nathan Williams. Inside centre Clayton Gullis converted the first try.
There was still time for Hamish Anderson to cross for Bedwas’s eighth try, improved upon by Hallett just before the half time whistle with Bedwas fifty-four points to twelve ahead.
Three minutes into the second half Bedwas continued where they had left off before the interval as Rhys Peters ran through for try converted by Hallett.
Harry Oliver added try number ten after six minutes as ran through a static defence to cross the whitewash. Hallett converted.
Bedwas replaced both starting props and after eighteen minutes Aaron Billingham added try number eleven, Hallett added the conversion. Again, it was Bedwas who scored almost straight way with Rhys Peters grabbing his second try of the afternoon. Hallett maintained his kicking accuracy to successfully convert.
Bedwas replaced Dale Rogers and Ben Sier with Lloyd Jones and Lewis Crane, but it was fresh legs by Abertillery gain some initiative as they mounted a series of assaults on the Bedwas line. Owen Jones received a yellow card for a ruck offence with twenty-six minutes played. Abertillery quickly took advantage of the extra man with Aneurin Williams crossing for a try improved upon by Gullis.
The visitors laid siege on the Bedwas line, but the defence stayed firm to keep out any attacks and having weathered the storm Rhys Peters crossed for his hat-trick try with three minutes to play. Hallett added the conversion.
With the last attack of the day, it was Aaron Billingham’s turn to cross for his third try. James Hallett added the conversion to bring up a personal haul of twenty-six points from thirteen successful conversion kicks from fourteen attempts.
It is another away trip for Bedwas next Saturday with a game at Aberdare RFC.
