Bedwas completed their home fixtures for the 2025-26 season having to work hard to overcome a plucky St Peters (who travelled with seventeen players) and at times, confusing interpretations from the match official seeing both sides concede many penalties.
On a sunny evening with a strong, cooling breeze in their faces Bedwas started brightly, quick hands across the line following a driving maul put Hamish Anderson in for a try with two minutes played. James Hallett added the conversion.
Owen Jones came close to extending the lead but was held up over the line.
Both sides wrestled for territory and the were no further scores until the twenty-fifth minute when Craig Hudd burst through to cross for a try converted by Hallett.
Two further Bedwas tries followed in the twenty-eighth minute through Aaron Billingham and thirtieth minute from Rhys Peters both converted by Hallett putting Bedwas in a commanding lead.
To their credit St Peters did not throw in the towel and pulled a try back after thirty-five minutes through full back Jay Higgins converted by Tom Jeans.
They added a second try with the last play of the half through centre Tom Francis again converted by Jeans, half time arrived with Bedwas 28 points to 14 ahead.
Bedwas started the second half with a bang. Hamish Anderson delivered an inch perfect cross field kick to Aaron Billingham who crossed the whitewash with two minutes played. James Hallett successfully converted.
Ten minutes later Luke Crane increased the Bedwas lead with a try converted by Hallett.
Rhys Morgans added try number seven five minutes later as the opposition looked to tire, Hallett again converting.
Two Craig Hudd tries in four minutes before the half hour further emphasised Bedwas’s advantage, one of which was from a cheeky kick through and gather Hallett converted both, the second from out wide.
With five minutes remaining St Peters pulled a try back from Ieuan Davies converted by Jeans which lifted their hopes of a gaining a four try bonus point, but the efforts were unsuccessful as the Bedwas defence held out.
Rhys Peters adding the final and tenth Bedwas try of the evening with three minutes to play. James Hallett added the extras to cement his man of the match award for a perfect ten out of ten performance off the kicking tee.
Bedwas travel to St Peters on Saturday for the final dance of a memorable season, at the conclusion of the game the team will be presented with the league winning trophy.
