Despite a stuttering start Bedwas recorded an eleven tries to two victory over Rumney to consolidate their lead at the top of the league table.
Bedwas opened the scoring after two minutes courtesy of a try under the posts from Jak Robbins, converted by James Hallett.
Rumney responded well five minutes later following a penalty kicked to touch outside centre was on the end of a sweeping move to dot down next to the corner flag. Connor Nagle’s conversion attempt went wide.
Bedwas tried to turn the screw but mishandling and the concession of too many penalties it was not until seventeen minutes had elapsed that Bedwas crossed for try number two. The Bedwas pack earned several close-range scrums before Lloyd Jones plunged over for a try which was unconverted.
Once again, the visitors fought back to cross five minutes later thanks to a try by full back Shane Collier which again was unconverted.
Bedwas began to hit their straps five minutes later as Arwel Hughes was driven over from a line-out, although Hallet missed the conversion attempt.
A second try of the afternoon by Jak Robbins after thirty-four minutes gave Bedwas a try bonus point, Hallett’s conversion putting Bedwas fourteen points ahead.
Shortly before half time the Bedwas forwards began to dominate a long-range driving maul during which Rumney conceded three penalties as Bedwas near the visitors try line saw the referee’s patience run out as he despatched hooker Louis Erskin to the sin bin for a ruck offence.
With the clock edging towards the interval Harry Oliver crashed through the defence for a try converted by Hallett to put Bedwas thirty-one points to ten ahead.
Bedwas made several changes in the early part of the second half with the lead being extended within two minutes of the restart as Ryan Thomas dived through the covering defence for a try converted by Hallett.
Rumney continued to battle away but to no avail before Lloyd Jones’s third try of the afternoon extended the Bedwas lead with twenty minutes left play.
Replacement Lewis Crane burst through a pair of Rumney tacklers before sprinting thirty metres for try number nine with thirteen minutes to play. Hallett successfully converted.
Two minutes later Jak Robbins took advantage of a tiring defence by taking a tap penalty quickly to cross for his third try of the afternoon. Hallett added the extras.
To their credit Rumney continued to try and salvage something from the game but the Bedwas defence kept them out before Tristan Kugler rounded off the scoring as he squeezed in at the corner for try improved upon by James Hallett.
This victory opens up a six-point lead for Bedwas at the top of the league standings, with Bridgend Athletic taking over second spot from Treorchy who slipped to a defeat by one point at St Josephs.
Next Saturday Bedwas travel to Abertillery RFC for another tricky away fixture.
