Cardiff Met RFC 43 Bedwas RFC 26
Bedwas completed their preseason fixtures going down 43 points to 26 to a strong, fast running student side at their Cyncoed headquarters.
On a warm sunny afternoon, the students set their stall out with early possession and were rewarded with a converted try after 6 minutes. They doubled their advantage seven minutes later with another converted try before adding an unconverted try shortly afterwards.
Bedwas pulled a try back after 21 minutes, Lloyd Wilkins made a break in midfield to pass onto Lewys Willacott whose pass found Adam Williams to charge in for a try. Ben Lewis added the extras.
Bedwas joy was short-lived as a clearance kick from their 22-yard area went ‘dead’ behind the Met goal line and from the resulting scrum the students found their left wing to cross for an unconverted try.
Three minutes later a fifth try of the afternoon put the students 29 points to 7 ahead, this try scored by their impressive outside centre under the posts facilitating a straightforward conversion.
The students were not finished and added another converted try with 5 minutes of the half to play.
Bedwas had the last say of the half as Rhys Jones squeezed through for a try converted by Lewis to make the half time score Cardiff Met 38 Bedwas 14.
Both sides made multiple changes for the second period. Mike Dacey pulled a try back for Bedwas early in the half, but Lloyd Wilkins’ conversion drifted wide.
A Leo Geraci try was ruled out for a foot being in touch before the students added their 7th try of the day which was unconverted.
Bedwas added a fourth try of the day shortly before the final whistle as Llewelyn Brown secured a loose clearance kick to run in from deep, Wilkins converted.
Despite the scoreline this was very much a good learning curve for the Bedwas squad. Everyone in the squad had some game time and can take positives from a game that was competitive.
Next Saturday Bedwas 1st team will be in action at Penallta RFC in the first game of the WRU Championship East season, whilst the Barbarians travel to take on their counterparts at Ynysddu.
