Bedwas secured their third successive bonus point win this time over a hardworking Mountain Ash side who showed tenacity to stay in the battle.

With the remnants of Storm Amy blowing into their faces Bedwas had the first opportunity to score but were penalised at a ruck early in the game. Mount countered until they were denied a scoring opportunity for the same offence.

Bedwas opened the scoring after twelve minutes as Rhys Morgans was driven over from a catch and drive line out. James Dixon added the extras.

Mount’s response was immediate as a deep restart kick was not claimed by the Bedwas defence and in the confusion the home side’s Rhys Pulman pounced on a loose ball to score a try. Outside half Callum Hall added the extras.

Both sides vied for an opening before Luke Crane ran through to double the Bedwas lead with 26 minutes played. Dixon converted from in front of the posts.

Steve Brittain bagged a try for the home side, converted by Hall to level up the scores.

Eight minutes later Rhys Peters was on the end of a flowing Bedwas move to cross in the left-hand corner. Dixon’s conversion attempt from a metre in from the touchline drifted across the posts.

With three minutes left to play in the half Mount reduced arrears via a Callum Hall penalty after Bedwas were penalised at a ruck.

Bedwas replaced both starting props at the start of the second half and increased their lead after two minutes played as the home side were adjudged to have illegally stopped a Bedwas maul with the referee awarding a penalty try and despatching a home player to the sin bin.

Despite the numerical disadvantage Callum Hall added a try and conversion to reduce the Bedwas lead to four points.

Two tries in three minutes gave Bedwas some breathing space. Jak Robbins and Rhys Peters both crossed the whitewash with Dixon successfully converting both tries.

Mount refused to buckle and within five minutes of Rhys Peters’ try a break down the Bedwas left followed by a kick through bouncing kindly into outside centre Jamie Long’s hand to cross for a try which was unconverted.

Mount scored their fifth try of the afternoon after twenty-nine minutes with Callum Hall intercepting a Bedwas pass to sprint fifty metres to cross under the posts for a try he converted himself; in doing so it meant the home side were only four points adrift of Bedwas.

Leo Geraci settled Bedwas nerves soon afterwards as he crossed the line in the left-hand corner for an unconverted try.

Bedwas held out for the remainder of the game to climb to the top of the league table.

Next week it will be home comforts for Bedwas as we welcome Talywain RFC to the Bridgefield.

Todays Bedwas Man of the Match was awarded to Rhys Morgans.
