Seven Bedwas tries were enough to see off Bridgend and bring to an end a successful seven days for the Bridgefield which produced three wins, 19 tries scored and 5 conceded.

On a cold sunny morning Bedwas got off to a good start as the ball was moved left through several pairs of hands for Mike Hathaway  to cross out wide for an unconverted try.

Sustained Bedwas forward pressure led to the second try again down the left hand side, the try scoring pass being adjudged deliberately knocked on by Bridgend winger Aaron Grabham who saw a yellow card for his trouble. Craig Hudd gratefully accepting the loose ball to dive in for a try improved upon by Steffan Jones.

Despite being a man down the Bridgend backs shown great tenacity to pull back through full back Joseph Scrivens; Ryan Evans successfully converting.

Bedwas’ third try after 27 minutes by Tom Rowlands increased the home lead further and although Bedwas had chances to increase their lead further the final pass went astray or adjudged forward and no further first half scoring occurred.

Bedwas ran in the fourth and bonus point claiming fourth try a minute into the second half Pat Lewis being on the end of a sweeping move to claim his first try for the club since returning from Cardiff. Steffan Jones added the conversion.

Bedwas were dominant at this stage and should have increased their lead but on at least three occasions the final pass was inaccurate and try scoring chances went begging.

Matthew John increased the Bedwas lead on the hour mark. Tom Rowlands took a quick tap penalty and with the visiting defence at sixes and sevens was able to put in a deft cross field kick for John to cross.

John added his second try of the afternoon seven minutes later after a break down the middle by Mike Callow put him in space to dot down Bedwas’ sixth try of the afternoon.   Steffan Jones successfully converted the second of these tries.

Bridgend pulled a try back after 73 minutes via replacement prop Iestyn Merriman, Evans’ second conversion of the afternoon reducing the errors but that was as good as it got for the visitors.

Bedwas came close to adding to their tally but Craig Hudd’s effort was ruled out for a forward pass. However their patience was rewarded after 79 minutes as second row Gareth Allen capped off a good personal afternoon’s work with an unconverted try (his first for Bedwas) left of the posts.

Bedwas man of the match sponsored by Casa Mia Restaurant of Caerphilly was awarded to Gareth Allen.

Next Saturday (3rd March) Bedwas host Newport in the Quarter final of the WRU National Cup, kick off is at 2-30pm.
