Llandovery RFC 6 Bedwas RFC 6
Principality Welsh Premiership, Saturday 03 November 2012.
Match report by John Meredith
Second placed Bedwas travelled away to the league leaders in the shape of unbeaten Llandovery, a side who have been scoring tries for fun and gaining bonus points wins as well.
The Drovers kicked off with a strong wind at their backs and were straight onto the front foot but were penalised for holding on to the ball at a ruck. Richard Powell cleared the ball downfield and from the resulting line out looked to drive on before losing possession. The home side countered and won a penalty for a scrum offence, kicked successfully by Rhys Jones.
The home side continued to dominate possession and territory but good defence by Bedwas kept them out before gaining a penalty for holding on and Richard Powell slotted over the kick.
Both sides tried to gain the upper hand but the now wet conditions made handling difficult and neither side could take the initiative. Stuart Thomas was sin binned for not retreating 10 metres at a penalty but Rhys Jones missed with his penalty goal attempt.
Llandovery started the second half where they left off the first and gained a penalty for blocking, Rhys Jones again firing wide. From the restart Drovers came agonisingly close to scoring the first try of the day but after a good kick and chase Richie Pugh knocked on when trying to touch down.
Bedwas fought to get more from the game but the home defence stood firm although Bedwas’s Powell missed a penalty chance before the home sides Jones was successful following a Bedwas high tackle.
From the restart Bedwas kicked for touch and put the home side under pressure gaining a penalty for holding on kicked by Powell.
The home side continued to press hard for a try but Bedwas were in no mood to ‘open the door’ to the try line. A Bedwas surge up field saw Scott Williams tackled just short of the line following a great break. Bedwas recycled the ball quickly but Powell’s drop goal attempt almost on full time was charged down and both sides settled for a draw.
Bedwas are next in league action on Saturday 17 November when Cardiff RFC are the visitors to the Bridge Field; kick off 2-30pm.
