Bedwas completed the double over the ‘Blue and Blacks’ in a hard fought deserved win at a snow swept freezing cold Arms Park. The foundations for this win were laid in the first half as the Bedwas pack led by Captain for the day Phillip Sargent dominated their hosts.
Cardiff took the lead after 10 minutes with a penalty goal from the impressive Gareth Davies but Bedwas were level barely a minute later with Stuart Thomas adding a penalty of his own.
The Bedwas pack worked tirelessly throughout the game and from a drive upfield and from a ruck in the Cardiff 25 scrum half James Pizey spread the ball to Sargent to cross in the corner, Stuart Thomas expertly adding the extras from wide out. Bedwas dominated without troubling the scoreboard but Thomas was able to add a further penalty before the break to put his side 13-3 up at the break.
The second half started as the first had ended with Bedwas on top. Thomas added a further penalty from an acute angle before replacement Cardiff fly half Sneddon added a penalty to reduce the arrears to 10 points. Bedwas were not deterred and after a drive deep into Cardiff territory the ball was slipped back to Ian Smerdon for a fine long range drop goal.
Stuart Thomas added a further penalty before to their credit Cardiff started to come back into the match.
Tries by replacements Nathan Rees and Chris Barry one of which was converted by Sneddon along with a penalty goal bought Cardiff to within a point of their visitors. Indeed had Sneddon been successful with his second conversion attempt from out wide his side would have most likely snatched an undeserved victory.
The only ‘downer’ for Bedwas was the serious injury sustained by Phillip Sargent who was stretchered off 7 minutes from time with suspected ligament damage.
Bedwas Man of the Match
Phillip Sargent, ‘Captain Marvel’ on the day led by example and was a rock in defence and attack and scored a crucial try.
