Cross Keys RFC 46 Bedwas RFC 15
Principality Welsh Premiership, Saturday 09 April 2011.
Match report by John Meredith
Bedwas visited in form Cross Keys for their penultimate away game of the 2010-11 season on a warm, sunny afternoon.
Keys quickly asserted themselves and when Bedwas failed to clear the ball Keys’s Jamie Davies pounced for a try after 8 minutes, converted by Steffan Jones.
Bedwas had an opportunity to pull three points back after Keys were penalised at a ruck but Thomas was unsuccessful with his penalty attempt. Bedwas played much of the half in the Keys half but made far too many errors.
Ryan Lee extended the home sides lead after 18 minutes against the run of play, Jones again adding the conversion. Bedwas couldn’t get a foothold in the game and it was no surprise when Lampard crossed for a converted try to put his side 21 points ahead. Jones and Thomas missed further penalty attempts after both sides were penalised before a break by Andrews saw Phil Williams cross for a try and a 26 points to nil lead.
Bedwas finally managed to get on the scoreboard just before half time when Stuart Thomas finally struck a penalty goal but Bedwas were second best by a distance.
Bedwas came out for the second half having to play catch up rugby. Keys extended their lead via two Jones penalties, Bedwas performing poorly and their cause was further hampered when James Murphy was sin binned.
A glimmer of hope for Bedwas appeared when a line out 5 yards out was won and Gareth Knight crossed for a try, Thomas adding the extras to reduce arrears to 32-10.
Keys were not going to be denied and following good play by the home backs Jamie Davies added his second try, once again converted by Jones. Bedwas didn’t give up either, and their endeavours saw a try out wide by Ryan Owen, Thomas missing with his conversion attempt.
Keys finished off a deserved victory in stoppage time when replacement Trowbridge crossed for a try improved upon by Jones.
