Bedwas visited Eugene Cross Park on a bitterly cold February afternoon looking for a vital win to put further space between the two clubs languishing in the lower reaches of the division.
Hywel Jenkins returned to the team following his one match ban the previous week and he took over the captaincy.
By and large Bedwas were outmuscled by their hosts who thoroughly deserved their win. In the opinion of this match reporter only stern Bedwas defence kept the score respectable, were this a boxing match the referee would have stopped the contest at half time.
Ebbw’s excellent fly half Gareth James controlled the game from start to finish and landed six successful penalty goals. Their former Cross Keys number 8 Rhys Williams was also quite outstanding and crossed for the only try of the game. For Bedwas Stuart Thomas played well at full back, Deri Mattravers worked his socks off, as did Phil Sargent and Matt Pizey. It could have been a ‘St Valentines Day Massacre but good defence from Bedwas kept the score down. Turning around after the half time break and trailing 17 points to nil Bedwas worked hard to get back into the game but wrong options on a number of occasions proved costly.
Bedwas now need a win to regain confidence, undoubtedly the coaching staff will sort it out but Bedwas supporters were very disappointed with the loss on Sunday.
