Cardiff RFC 39 Bedwas RFC 18
Welsh Premiership, Friday 10 April 2009
Bedwas made the short journey to the Capital City on Good Friday looking for valuable points to cement their Welsh Premiership status and hinder their hosts title credentials.
Cardiff enetered the match on the back of twelve successive victories Bedwas knew this would not be an easy task.
The game was less than one minute old when Bedwas wing took advantage of a mix up in the home defence to run in a try, Stuart Thomas was unfortunately wide with his conversion. Thomas then missed two further penalty attempts the second of which hit an upright before Cardiff began to up the pressure. Thomas and home outside half Gareth Davies exchanged penalties before Cardiff took control with tries from Ryan Howells and Gareth Chapman. The home forwards turned on the pressure in the latter stages of the half and earnt a penalty try for a 22 points to 8 half time lead.
Bedwas began the second half on the offensive but were hindered by a bad, unfortunate injury to Gethin Worgan. Worgan accidentally broke an arm in a tackle and will miss the rest of the season. Bedwas suffered further when flanker Stuart Phillips was sin binned after 47 minutes and Cardiff took advantage with tries from Craig Morgan and Chris Czekaj.
Home forward Adam Powell was sinbinned after 61 minutes but Cardiff continued to dominate with Czekaj adding a second try after 67 minutes.
Bedwas battled on in vain and scored a consolation try through replacement flanker Paul Bowen, converted by Stuart Thomas but with Cardiff gaining a bonus point they kept their title claims on course and left Bedwas to continue to battle to hold onto the Premier status.
