Bedwas RFC 25 Aberavon RFC 23
Principality Welsh Premiership, Saturday 12 October 2008.
Match report by John Meredith, photographs by Ian Lovell.
Bedwas, looking for their first win of the season took on a strong Aberavon outfit at the Bridge Field. Bedwas played some brilliant rugby in a well led forward effort with ‘Old Warhorse’ Deri Mattravers, playing his first game of the season very much to the fore.
Bedwas scored two good tries in the first half, the second a cracker by Jimmy Norris and also had one disallowed, when adjudged offside following a charge down. A few missed kicks could have made the margin greater but Bedwas were pleased to make interval 19 points to 3 to the good.
Aberavon came back strongly and were also denied a try, the referee simply unsighted and unable to check the grounding in a pile up over the line. A penalty try and a long range effort by right wing Richard Carter, combined with three penalty goals and a conversion saw the visitors push Bedwas all the way.
In the meantime Bedwas Stuart Thomas full back found his kicking boots and kicked two valuable penalty goals, one from within his own half as Bedwas clung on.
Bedwas dug in with a siege mentality and dogged out a deserved 25 points to 23 victory to lift morale in the club. Congratulations and well done to all the players and coaches on an excellent victory.
