Swansea 23-15 Bedwas

SWANSEA stopped the early season rot but should have made hay in the late summer sunshine at St Helen’s.

The All Whites, who had lost both their opening encounters, enjoyed enough possession to cross for a hatful of scores but in the end the try count finished 2-2.

And both Swansea tries came in the first half leaving it a frustrating second 40 minutes for coach Richard Webster.

“It was a win, which I’m happy with, but it should have been a victory with a bonus point,” admitted Webster, who included scrum-half Rhodri Wells after he had returned on Saturday morning from Ospreys duty in Leinster.

“We are playing some good exciting rugby at times but we are just not finishing tries off.”

When Swansea did cross the whitewash they were well-worked tries.

Blindside flanker Steffan Jones set Swansea on their way finishing off a seventh minute effort .

And after Swansea had suffered a mistake-ridden 20 minutes of lost ball and knock-ons they finally got their act together doubling their score with a try for centre Dai Watts, who went over after a neat scissors move involving Chris Shelmerdine and Richard Payne. But any expectations of a mini cricket score evaporated in a forgettable second period.

Nicky Thomas did keep the home side in charge with two penalties but the try scoring came from Bedwas completely against the run of play.

Jimmy Norris went over courtesy of a long-range counter attack and Tom Williams followed him over after stealing possession. Bedwas will rue Stuart Thomas missing 11 points from four kicks.
