Swansea RFC 10 Bedwas RFC 3 Welsh Premier Division Friday 8 February 2008
Match report by Ian Lovell and John Davies, photography by Ian Lovell.
Bedwas travelled to Swansea on the evening of February 8th and came away wandering how having dominated possession and territory for much of the game only have a solitary bonus point to show for their endeavours.
Bedwas started the game in a positive mood taking the game to their hosts, Stuart Thomas putting an early drop goal attempt wide as Bedwas laid siege in the Swansea 22. The visitors continued to battle on only to be denied by stout defending by the home side. Bedwas gained a long-range penalty after 10 minutes but again this disappointly drifted wide.
Swansea seemed content to soak up wave after wave of Bedwas attacks and then hit their opponents on the break with their pacy back line. They did exactly this midway through the half when a break from their own half resulted in a ruck which saw prop forward Dan Matthews driven over, Ricky Williams adding the extras.
Bedwas again looked to take the game to their opponents but were unable to break down a well organised defence and half time arrived with the home sides 7 points to nil to the good.
The second half began much the same as the first, Bedwas replacing Phil Sargent with Andrew Tibbatts after 45minutes. As Bedwas continued attack Swansea outside half Damian Karunua found himself sin binned after 55 minutes for an alleged punch, Stuart Thomas confidently slotting the resulting penalty. For all their efforts Bedwas could still not find away past a committed Swansea defence despite regular replacements as fresh legs came into the fray.
Bedwas should have scored during Kurunua’s sin binning after Simon Jones and Kieran Crawford combined to put Matthew Pizey away but he was adjudged to have hit the corner flag before scoring and the try was ruled out.
Bedwas continued to battle but Swansea had the last word when Ricky Williams added a penalty following a Bedwas infringement at a ruck to leave the score at Swansea 10 Bedwas 3.
Next Saturday 16th February sees Bedwas entertain local rivals Newport in the Konica Minolta Cup, kick off 2-30 p.m
